My Congratulations To Wharton

So they got blindsided with this shrill Petition signed by 178 Professors led by Ania Joomba, Suvir Kaul and T. Ghose, threatening them with grave-sounding State Department bureaucratese from a 2005 SNAFU. They advised the students to be smart and let go on the rope a bit – and watch the Petition Gang tangle themselves in a heap. Shri Arvind Kejriwal, the new face of Indian politics that Wharton lined up at short notice, delivered the coup de grace with statesmanlike class[1]: “I am not a supporter of Mr Modi. In fact, I don’t agree with him on many things and have publicly opposed him on many occasions. However, I would like to put on record my dismay at the cancellation of his invitation to speak at this forum. To … Read entire article »

Time to Modi-fy India

Enough is enough. India is sick and tired. We are sick of lies and deceptions, of scams and cover-ups, of promises and failures, of vote bank and divisive politics, of nepotism and sycophancy. We are tired of the bickering, pompous politicians and their ignoble associates, the dynastic rulers, the family business of politics and the scams and schemes they manage. We are appalled by the directionless and disengaged government, awestruck by its leadership or the lack of it, disgusted with its indifference to the need of its citizenry and terrified by its indecisiveness on matters as basic as internal and external security. We are mocked as the mango people of the banana republic. We are made to believe that the country is for the privileged and the influential and the rest only entitled to crumbs. … Read entire article »

Lies, damn lies and reporting Gujarat

When it comes to reporting on ‘Gujarat 2002’, the media has not only a different idiom and different sets of moral and ethical standards to be applied to different people, but demands a totally different jurisprudence! Thus the edict, ‘the law takes its own course’ does not apply to Gujarat riots cases. The judiciary must take media’s word for it and convict all accused in the cases and more importantly Narendra Modi.  According to the secular media the ends of justice would be met if and only if Narendra Modi is jailed for life, irrespective of whether there is any evidence to prove his culpability or not. On the other hand, a Sanjeev Bhatt under investigation for crimes like illegal confinement of people, extortion and murder is a national icon only because he squeals on Narendra Modi, no … Read entire article »

Gujarat riots and the ‘secular’ Galahads of justice!

‘The law will take its course’ is an oft heard cliché, when politicians explain away the misdeeds of their comrades-in-arms. But political discourse in India has a new norm for Hindus and Hindu organisations in general and Narendra Modi in particular. When it comes to Narendra Modi, the law can not take its course; should not take its course. It has to instantly convict him and send him to jail. The norms of jurisprudence do not apply to him. The inhuman burning of 59 Karsevaks do not matter to the secular jihads. The 254 Hindus killed in the riots as against 790 Muslims do not count. The fact that the number of Hindus arrested, 27, 901, was almost four times the number of Muslims (7,651) detained during the post-Godhra riots is of … Read entire article »

Binayak Sen – Connecting the dots

Fans of Dr. Binayak Sen, a Maoist sympathizer, convicted with life imprisonment for charges of sedition and anti-national activities, by trial court and whose initial bail appeal was rejected by Chhattisgarh high court, have ample reasons for jubilation in recent times. Not only did the Supreme Court grant him a bail but he was also appointed to the National Health Planning Commission’s steering committee. It is no secret that Dr Sen enjoys a huge popularity and has a long list of national and international supporters, including Nobel laureates like Amartya Sen, other prominent Indians including leftist academician Romila Thapar, Christian leader John Dayal, ill-famed activists Teesta Setalvad, self proclaimed Swami Agnivesh and Suzanna Arundhati Roy, a seditionist and a pro-Maoist herself. Statements of support for him had come from Amnesty International, The … Read entire article »

Communal violence bill reduces Hindus to the status of Jews in pre-War Germany

A casual glance at the opening parts of NAC’s “PREVENTION OF COMMUNAL AND TARGETED VIOLENCE (ACCESS TO JUSTICE AND REPARATIONS) BILL, 2011” (PCTVB) is unnerving. The range and sweep of the draft bill is awesome to say the least. It is diabolical in design and appeared to be intended as CongI’s 2014 election manifesto. For in the aftermath of a plethora of corruption scams and the self-goals it scored in Andhra Pradesh which returned 33 MPs each in 2004 and 2009, nothing but nothing is going to prevent its decimation in the next election. Indira Gandhi began diluting the processes of democratic institutions in 1969 culminating in their complete subversion in 1975. She had then ‘incarcerated the nation’, figuratively speaking, all for pelf and profit. Her daughter-in-law decided to reduce the … Read entire article »

India: Follow Israel’s Example!

Securing borders with a buffer zone against hostile religious states [Author's preface: How can any leader bring himself to sit across the table and negotiate peace, with someone who represents an ideology, whose mission is the outright annihilation of his people and his state? And, what can you say about a people, who choose a terrorist organization as their governing body, rather than choosing leadership that represents peaceful solutions for the future of its people. Where has all the common sense gone? Does any ideology that wants the destruction of people, just because they are different, deserve a place on this earth? Are they not better off with their virgins? Any ideology, faith or governance system that calls for the destruction of a people, solely based on their creed, race or … Read entire article »

Narendra Modi, Godhra & Gujarat riots: IBN-Live ‘Disregards’ Truth!

Years ago, I have come across a book of the “Learn English in 30 days” variety. I am unable recollect its title, but one of the exercises in it was to ‘rewrite a given passage to give it an opposite meaning’. The book indeed advises the reader to assume that he is “editing a rival newspaper” and that “the idea is to strip the passage of its context and meaning.” It helpfully adds, “Never mind the ethics. It is purely a technical exercise.” I am reminded of the book and the exercise, after reading an IBN-Live report following some tweets posted on it. This is stuff that makes an essential case study for students of journalism. Firstly, it teaches students, what one tweeter, Narayanan (@visaraj) put as “Secular School of Grammar … Read entire article »

Lalu Prasad and Narendra Modi: A tale of two chief ministers

It was during Lalu Prasad Yadav’s heyday as Chief Minister of Bihar, that a colleague in Patna told us these stories, the first as one of those Lalu jokes and the second as a real life incident: “A famous surgeon in Patna was kidnapped. His kidnappers demanded a ransom of two lakh rupees for his release. He informed his kidnappers that they had better release him as he was one of Lalu Prasad Yadav’s personal physicians. The kidnappers laughed and told him that if he was so confident that Lalu would come to his rescue he could call him. The surgeon called Lalu and requested him to get him released. Lalu simply asked him to tell him how much they were asking to release him. When the surgeon told him the … Read entire article »
